In a significant legal development, Timileyin Ajayi, the suspect in the murder of Salome Adaidu, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of culpable homicide punishable by death. The arraignment took place on Monday, January 27, 2025, before Justice Simeon Aboki at Court 2 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The charge, brought forward by the Police, accuses Ajayi of causing the death of Salome Adaidu. Despite his plea of not guilty, the case is set to proceed to trial, with the court scheduling hearings from March 17 to March 20, 2025.
Stanley Nwaforagu, the Officer-in-Charge of the Legal department of the Nasarawa State Police Command, expressed confidence in the evidence gathered against Ajayi. Speaking to the press after the court proceedings, Nwaforagu stated, “We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge and we are optimistic that justice will be done.” He emphasized the Police’s commitment to pursuing the case until the full legal process is concluded, ensuring justice is served for the victim and her family.
Defendant’s counsel, Joseph Tukur, reiterated his client’s right to a fair trial. He explained that while it is common for defense attorneys to represent individuals accused of serious crimes like murder, his role is to ensure that the prosecution proves its case beyond reasonable doubt. Tukur further emphasized that the day’s session was primarily for the arraignment, and now the case will move towards the trial phase.
