President Bola Tinubu has announced significant changes in the structure of Nigeria’s federal ministries, scrapping both the Ministry of Niger Delta Development and the Ministry of Sports. This decision, revealed during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, marks a reorganization aimed at enhancing efficiency in governance.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), the restructuring involves the following changes:
Ministry of Regional Development: This new ministry will oversee all regional development commissions, such as:
- Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)
- North West Development Commission
- South West Development Commission
- North East Development Commission
This change replaces the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, consolidating the oversight of regional commissions into a single body for better coordination.
National Sports Commission: The responsibilities previously handled by the Ministry of Sports will now be taken over by the National Sports Commission, effectively eliminating the sports ministry while centralizing sports administration.
Merger of Ministries: The Ministry of Tourism has been merged with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, streamlining these sectors under one umbrella to promote tourism, culture, and creative industries more effectively.
These changes reflect the administration’s efforts to consolidate governance structures for improved operational efficiency and better resource management.
