A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made efforts to resolve the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly during the Christmas holiday. Despite Tinubu’s intervention, the conflict ended with the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on Monday over allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety.
Obasa, who had held the position for years, was replaced by his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda. Speaking on a Channels TV program, Oki explained that Tinubu’s involvement came after the APC’s Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) drew his attention to the simmering crisis while he was in Lagos for the holidays.
“Before the president came home, this issue had been lingering. Members of the GAC, in their wisdom, brought the matter to the president’s attention,” Oki said. “As a father and leader, the president called a meeting to understand the concerns raised by party elders. Unfortunately, he witnessed firsthand Obasa’s recalcitrance, which, I believe, was the turning point.”
The APC chieftain described the impeachment as a last resort, highlighting that it stemmed from Obasa’s refusal to heed advice from party elders and his inability to address longstanding grievances within the assembly. “This was not an impulsive decision,” Oki stressed. “It was the result of unresolved tensions and a clear disregard for counsel.”
The events mark a significant political shift in Lagos State, as Obasa’s tenure as Speaker had been characterized by both influence and controversy. Tinubu’s failed attempt to mediate the crisis underscores the complex dynamics within the ruling party, as well as the challenges of maintaining unity among its members.
With Meranda now at the helm, all eyes are on the Lagos State House of Assembly to see how this leadership change will impact governance and party cohesion in the state.
