In a moving tribute, Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu made every effort to save the life of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Speaking to selected journalists on Wednesday, General Oluyede shared the sorrow that has filled the ranks of the Nigerian Army since the loss of their leader, describing it as a deeply painful moment for the country.
“His death is highly regrettable,” Oluyede stated solemnly. He explained that under President Tinubu’s leadership, every measure was taken to ensure that Lagbaja received the best possible care. Tragically, despite these efforts, Lagbaja, who had devoted his life to Nigeria’s security and stability, passed away after a battle with an undisclosed illness.
General Oluyede described Lagbaja as a “selfless leader” known for his dedication, courage, and professionalism. “He led the Nigerian Army with thoroughness and bravery. His loss is a profound one for us, and we pray that the good Lord will grant him rest,” Oluyede said. He encouraged Nigerians to celebrate Lagbaja’s life and legacy, urging the nation to honor him for his immense contributions to Nigeria’s security.
Lieutenant General Lagbaja passed away in Lagos while receiving medical treatment, just days after returning to Nigeria. The 56-year-old’s legacy continues through his contributions and the respect he earned among his peers and subordinates. In light of his passing, Oluyede, now the Acting Chief of Army Staff, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
