Nigerian social critic and online personality, Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has recently apologized to the Nigeria Police Force following an investigation into his use of a police uniform in one of his viral videos. The apology came after reports highlighted the Nigerian Police Force’s strong disapproval of his unauthorized attire in the video, where he humorously introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of the Online Division.”
The police swiftly condemned Otse’s use of the uniform, which they viewed as unauthorized and potentially misleading. Following this, the Vanguard reported that the police initiated a formal investigation into the incident. In response to the escalating situation, VeryDarkMan released a video statement on Thursday, expressing regret for donning the police-like attire and apologizing for any misconceptions that may have arisen from it.
In his apology, VeryDarkMan explained that he had no intention of impersonating the police, underscoring that the uniform was a mere costume used as part of a comedic skit. He clarified his actions, stating, “I didn’t intend to impersonate the police in any way and I tender my unreserved apologies to the Nigeria police force and the office of the Inspector General of Police.”
Otse further advised the public on the importance of seeking official approval before wearing any attire resembling law enforcement uniforms to prevent similar misunderstandings or possible legal actions. He highlighted the risks associated with wearing uniforms without permission, warning that even innocent intentions could lead to complications. “You might want to use it for good,” he said, “but there are others that might want to use it for bad. So it’s good to get full approval before using anything that might seem impersonating.”
Otse also shared that he had recently returned from a police station, where he underwent questioning regarding the video and his intent behind wearing the uniform. The social critic expressed gratitude to his lawyer, Adeyanju Deji, who accompanied him through the legal proceedings and supported his right to free expression.
